The monument is 4 mi. s. on US 30, then 3 mi. w. on Bell Rapids Rd., following signs. The 3.4-million-year-old fossil beds, one of the continent's best Pliocene freshwater fish and small-mammal fossil sites, have yielded more than 220 plant and animal species, including complete skeletons of the Hagerman horse. A 10.5-mile auto route provides insights into area geology and geography and access to the Upper Salmon Falls Dam, the Snake River Overlook, the 3-mile trailhead for the Emigrant Trail and the Oregon Trail Overlook.
